Osiris · Chapter 1 of 7
The Good King
Kingship · Abundance · Before the murder
Every story about him is told backwards, from the death.
Egyptian tradition remembers Osiris as a king who ruled well, and associates him with the flood, the grain and the order that made settled life possible. The hymns praise him as the one who made the land green. What the sources rarely do is narrate his reign at any length — he is characterised mostly by what came after, so the good king survives in the texts largely as the thing that was lost. Later Greek writers filled that gap with a civilising mission. The older material is quieter, and far more interested in the throne than the biography.
