Osiris · Chapter 2 of 7
The Murder
The killing · A silence in the sources · A late narrator
The most famous death in Egyptian religion is the one Egypt would not describe.
Egyptian sources allude to the killing of Osiris constantly and narrate it almost never. Spells refer to the crime, mourning texts assume it, the murderer is named — his brother Set — and the event itself is stepped around, apparently because setting it down was not considered safe. The connected story most people know, with the banquet, the fitted chest and the river, comes from Plutarch: a Greek author of around 100 CE writing for Greek readers, at a distance of two and a half thousand years from the oldest Egyptian material.
