The Contendings

A tribunal · Comedy · A letter from the dead

The succession was settled by paperwork, eventually.

A single New Kingdom papyrus preserves the succession dispute as farce, and it is the fullest source for the quarrel. Horus and Set argue their claim before a tribunal for eighty years; the judges dither, take bribes and change their minds. There are boat races in ships of stone, a severed hand, an ill-advised night together. Osiris, dead and off-stage, finally writes in to point out that everyone eating barley owes it to him, and that the underworld's monsters answer to him. The tribunal finds for Horus shortly afterwards.

Unlocks in-game at Ascension tier 4.
