Osiris · Chapter 5 of 7

The Grain

Sowing · Return · What the fields meant

They made the argument against death in barley, and watched it come up.

Egyptian tradition tied Osiris to the grain, and the tie was practical as much as poetic. Beds of soil shaped like his body were sown with barley, watered, and left in tombs to sprout — objects archaeologists still find, still green once. The flood came, the fields recovered, the seed went into the dark and came up again. Egyptians used that as the argument, and the mourning rites ran on the agricultural calendar. Whatever else the religion claimed, this part it could point at, every year, in the ground.

Unlocks in-game at Ascension tier 2.
