The Contest For The Rock
Salt water · An olive tree · A flooded plain
Athens chose the olive, and kept his receipt on display.
In the Athenian myth, both gods want the city, so both give it something. Poseidon strikes the rock of the Acropolis with his trident and brings out water — salt water, in the surviving accounts. Athena plants an olive tree. The judges award the city to Athena — in Apollodorus, because Kekrops testified that her olive came first. Having lost, he floods the Thriasian plain. And then the part modern retellings drop — Athens keeps worshipping him. The mark of the trident was shown on the Acropolis for centuries, and the salt spring was still being pointed out to visitors in the Roman period.
