Earth-Shaker — illustration for the poseidon chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

poseidon · Chapter 2 of 4

Earth-Shaker

Earth-Shaker · A Mycenaean name · The ground that follows you

The sea you can leave. The ground is the one that follows you inland.

Ennosigaios, Enosichthon, Gaieochos — Earth-Shaker, Earth-Holder. Homer uses these constantly, and they are older and more fixed than anything about waves. The Greeks worshipped him as Earth-Shaker no less than as lord of the sea, and the Linear B tablets back that up: a Knossos tablet names an Earth-Shaker, and at Pylos Poseidon is a major deity centuries before Homer. The sea came to him afterwards, or beside it. This is why his temper reads the way it does in the Odyssey — the storm that wrecks Odysseus is raised by a god who also moves the ground, and there is nothing to sail away from.
