Poseidon Hippios — illustration for the poseidon chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

poseidon · Chapter 3 of 4

Poseidon Hippios

Of horses · An Arcadian tradition · A wave with a white crest

Look at a breaking wave long enough and you see what they saw.

He is worshipped as Poseidon Hippios — of horses — across the Greek world, and the myths keep making him one. Pausanias records an Arcadian tradition in which Demeter, fleeing him, takes the form of a mare, and the offspring is the immortal horse Areion. Pegasus springs from Medusa's blood after Perseus kills her, and Medusa's children are his. The association is not decorative. A breaking wave with a white crest is a running horse to anyone who has watched the sea, and a god who shakes the ground and drives the surf is already describing something that bolts.
