Rakhsh · Chapter 3 of 5
Three Times He Woke Him
A dragon · Two false alarms · A third refusal to move
He was told to wake his rider, then punished for waking him.
The third trial turns on the obedience the poem has already complicated. A dragon lives on that ground, and twice Rakhsh wakes Rostam and twice the dragon withdraws before it can be seen, so that Rostam threatens to kill the horse for disturbing his sleep. The third time Rakhsh wakes him and holds his ground, and Rostam sees the dragon at last. They kill it together, the account says, the horse biting while the man cuts. The obedience his rider demanded back in the reed-bed would have finished them both here, and the poem lets that stand.
