Rostam · Chapter 2 of 8
Rakhsh
A hand on the back · A colt with no price · One unit
Chosen by the only test that mattered. He did not sink.
The poem gives the horse nearly as much care as the man. Sent to choose a mount, Rostam presses his hand down on the back of every colt in the herd until each one sinks under it, and finds a single animal that does not: a rose-coloured stallion dappled with saffron, guarded by a mare that charges him for coming near. The herdsman tells him the horse has no owner and no price except Rostam himself. Ferdowsi calls him Rakhsh, and from that point the tradition rarely lets Rostam ride anything else.
- A back that held
