Rostam · Chapter 4 of 8
Sohrab
A token left · Two duels · An armband too late
Both of them had the information. Neither of them asked.
The tradition's cruellest episode is the one in which nobody lies. At Samangan, Rostam fathers a son on Tahmineh and leaves a token to be given to the child. Sohrab grows into a champion, rides out to find his father, and the two meet in armour without names. The poem lets them almost recognise each other twice. On the second day Rostam takes him under the ribs, and the dying boy names his father — to warn him of the vengeance coming — then shows the armband. The one medicine that could have saved him is in the king's tent, and it does not arrive.
