Rostam · Chapter 6 of 8
The Pit
A brother's ground · A horse overruled · One last arrow
The horse was right, and was not listened to, once.
The tradition ends him with a trap rather than a fight. Shaghad, his half-brother, has a hunting ground in Kabul dug with pits and the pits set with spears point upward. Rakhsh smells them and refuses the ground, and Rostam — for the one time in the poem that matters — overrules the horse. Both go down. Dying, Rostam asks his brother for a bow to keep animals off, and Shaghad hands it over and steps behind a plane tree; the last arrow goes through the tree and through him. The poem gives its champion a death he only half avenges.
