Akvan's Choice

Ask a liar which way to fall, then fall the other way.
One of the poem's odder episodes opens with Rostam asleep on the grass after hunting an onager that was not an onager. Akvan the div cuts out the turf he is lying on, lifts the whole piece into the air, and offers him a choice: dropped on the mountains, or dropped into the sea. Rostam, awake now and working it out, asks for the mountains — on the reasoning that a div does the opposite of whatever it is asked. He goes into the water instead, swims clear, and walks back for his horse.
