Simurgh · Chapter 3 of 6
Instructions, Not a Miracle
An obstructed birth · A summons burned · A method, not a wonder
She did not perform the rescue. She described it, and stood back.
The Shahnameh has Rudabeh labour for days and come close to dying, because the child is too large to be born. Zal burns the feather and the Simurgh comes — and what she brings is a procedure. Dull the pain with wine, the poem has her say; bring a skilled man with a blade, open the side, lift the child out, close the wound and dress it, and draw a feather over the place. Mother and son both live, and the boy is named for the deliverance. It is the one scene in the cycle where the bird could simply have worked a wonder, and the verse has her explain a method instead.
- The feather burned
- Steps, not magic
- Both survive
