He Means to Crown His Father — illustration for the Sohrab chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

Sohrab · Chapter 2 of 7

He Means to Crown His Father

Not a raid · Two thrones · A son's arithmetic

He was not fighting for Turan. Turan was a horse he had borrowed.

What he intends is stated in the Shahnameh without hedging, and it is worth reading carefully, because it is not a raid. He will raise an army of Turan, drive Kavus from the throne of Iran, and give the crown and the treasure to Rostam in his place; and then he will march out of Iran and take Afrasiab's seat as well. Since Rostam is the father and he is the son, he says, no one else will be king. He is not fighting for Turan. He is a threat to the man who is arming him, and Afrasiab can read it as clearly as anyone.
