Susano-o · Chapter 1 of 6

The Brother Who Would Not Take the Sea

Izanagi · Refusal · Grief

His first act was to turn down the world he was handed.

The Kojiki describes Susanoo born from Izanagi's nose and given the sea to rule, and describes him refusing it. He weeps instead — long enough, in the telling, for green mountains to wither and rivers to run dry — because he wants to go to the land where his mother is. His father banishes him for it. It is an unusual opening for a storm figure: not rage but grief, and a refusal to take up the post he was made for.
