Cast Out of Heaven — illustration for the Susano-o chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

Susano-o · Chapter 2 of 6

Cast Out of Heaven

An oath · Desecration · Expulsion

He proved his good faith, then spent it in an afternoon.

Japanese mythology describes Susanoo climbing to heaven to take leave of Amaterasu, who arms herself, certain he has come to take her realm. They swear an oath and produce children from a sword and from jewels, and he declares himself vindicated — then celebrates by wrecking her fields and her weaving hall. The assembled kami fine him, cut his beard and his nails, and expel him. He arrives on earth as an exile with nothing, which is exactly where he becomes someone else.
