Tahmineh · Chapter 2 of 6
The Armband
A mobad sent for · A bead with no named stone · A silence kept
He left her a token, and told nobody that it existed.
The Shahnameh does not make this an affair. Rostam sends for a mobad that same night and asks her father for her formally; the king is pleased, and the rites are performed with the household blessing them. At dawn he takes from his own arm a mohreh — a bead the poem says was famous throughout the world, and whose stone it never names — and gives it to her with an instruction rather than a promise. If the child is a daughter, plait it into her hair. If a son, bind it on his arm as his father's token. Then he rides for Zabulistan, and Ferdowsi adds that nobody heard him speak of any of it.
