Tahmineh · Chapter 3 of 6

What She Told Her Son

A boy demands an answer · A letter and three rubies · Two conditions

She kept no secret from him about his father. The secret was him.

At ten Sohrab demands to know who his father is and threatens her life for the answer, and the Shahnameh has her give it at once and proudly. She names Rostam, son of Zal, son of Sam; she shows him a letter his father wrote, and three bright rubies with three beads of gold. Then she sets two conditions on it. Afrasiab must never learn of it, because he is Rostam's enemy and would kill the son to wound the father. And Rostam must not learn what the boy has grown into — because if he does, the poem has her say, he will send for him, and it will tear her heart out.
