Talos · Chapter 6 of 6
The Other Talos
Invention · Envy · A bird that will not fly high
Two Taloses, and both of them undone by somebody cleverer.
Greek tradition carries a second Talos who has nothing to do with Crete and shares the name anyway. In Apollodorus he is Daedalus' nephew and apprentice, and he is the better craftsman: the saw is his, taken from the backbone of a fish, and so are the compasses. Daedalus threw him off the Acropolis for it. Ovid tells the same story and calls the boy Perdix, and has Athena catch him as he falls and turn him into a partridge — a bird that, ever since, has kept close to the ground.
