Tengu Weather — illustration for the Tengu chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

Tengu · Chapter 6 of 6

Tengu Weather

Mountain sounds · Named phenomena · Being hidden

Some of him you meet. Most of him you only hear.

Alongside the tengu you can draw, Japanese folk tradition keeps a set of tengu you can only hear, and the names are wonderfully specific. Tengu-daoshi is the crash of a great tree coming down in the night, with the wind and the shudder of it, and no fallen tree anywhere in the morning. Tengu-tsubute is a scatter of stones out of nowhere. Tengu-warai is high laughter carrying round a slope with nobody on it. And a person who walks into the woods and does not come out has been hidden — tengu-kakushi, one form of being spirited away.

Unlocks in-game at Ascension tier 5.
