Reckoner of Years

The moon · Calendars · Figures that merge

A month is just the moon, counted by somebody careful.

Egyptian tradition treats the moon as an instrument rather than a light, and Thoth is one of the figures holding it. Festivals were set by it, months were counted off it, and his titles run to reckoning and to time. He was not the only lunar figure and did not stay separate from the others: at his own city he appears fused with Khonsu as Khonsu-Djehuti, two moons folded into one name. Egyptian religion did this often, and it is a useful corrective — these are not characters in a cast list but overlapping ways of talking about the same sky.
