Thoth · Chapter 4 of 7
The Recorder at the Scales
Spell 125 · The record · Why writing it matters
The scales decide it. The writing makes it stick.
The Egyptian judgement scene, as the funerary sources describe it, puts the heart on one pan and the feather of Ma'at on the other — and the picture nearly always includes a third figure standing to one side with a palette. Anubis attends the instrument; Thoth writes down what it says. That division of labour is the whole design. A measurement that nobody records is an opinion, and Egyptian religion did not want the last verdict on a life to be an opinion. In some versions he appears as a baboon squatting on the beam itself, watching for the moment it steadies.
