Thoth · Chapter 5 of 7
The Eye Made Whole
The wedjat · Repair · What Egypt chose to wear
They did not wear the eye. They wore it being fixed.
Egyptian tradition has the eye of Horus injured in the quarrel with Set and then restored, and the restored eye — the wedjat, a word built on the sense of being sound or intact — became one of the most-worn amulets Egypt produced. Thoth is the figure most often credited with the mending. It is worth sitting with what that means for him. The one who records the verdict is also the one sent to put back what the fight broke, and the object Egyptians actually carried was not the wound and not the weapon but the mending.
