The Cauldron and Another Father

A giant father · A cauldron · A journey mostly Thor's

Two poems gave him two fathers, and neither of them apologised.

One Eddic poem gives him a family the Prose Edda does not. In Hymiskvida, Tyr travels with Thor to fetch a brewing cauldron large enough for the gods' ale, and on the way he calls the giant Hymir his father. Snorri elsewhere makes him a son of Odin. The two traditions are not reconciled anywhere in the surviving corpus, and Old Norse poetry is comfortable with that in a way later systematising is not. The poem is mostly Thor's in any case: Tyr knows where the cauldron is, and the strength that carries it away belongs to somebody else.

Unlocks in-game at Ascension tier 1.
