Garm at the End — illustration for the Tyr chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

Tyr · Chapter 4 of 5

Garm at the End

A bound hound · A mutual death · A fight off to one side

He got the hound. The wolf was already spoken for.

Snorri's telling of Ragnarok assigns him an opponent and then kills them both. Tyr fights Garm, the hound bound at a cave mouth, and the Prose Edda says each is the death of the other. The wolf whose binding cost him a hand is Odin's opponent in that battle, not his. The older poem Voluspa knows Garm well — its refrain has the hound howling — but does not name Tyr in the fight, which leaves the pairing as Snorri's arrangement or as something he inherited from a source now lost. It is a quiet end for a god whose name once meant god.

Unlocks in-game at Ascension tier 2.
