The Cave — illustration for the Ame-no-Uzume chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

Ame-no-Uzume · Chapter 2 of 4

The Cave

The dance · Laughter · A door opened

The plan was not to open the door. It was to be worth looking at.

Japanese mythology describes the sun withdrawn into a cave and the world gone dark, with eight hundred kami unable to shift a stone door. Uzume turns a tub over, stamps on it until the sound carries, works herself into a trance and pulls her clothing loose, and the assembly's laughter is loud enough to shake heaven. That laughter is the mechanism. Amaterasu, hearing delight in a world she has darkened, opens the door to ask what could possibly be funny, and that is enough.
