The One Who Blocked the Road

Japanese mythology describes the heavenly descent halting at a crossroads where an enormous earthly kami stands lighting the way and will not be passed. The chronicles say Uzume was sent to ask his business, chosen because she was the one who could out-face anyone. She does; he explains himself — he has come to guide them, not to block them — and the party goes on. Sarutahiko is his name, and the Kojiki has that name handed to her afterwards, which is where her Sarume line takes its own. Later tradition marries the two of them. The chronicles do not go that far.
