Opener of the Ways — illustration for the Wepwawet chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

Wepwawet · Chapter 1 of 4

Opener of the Ways

A name that is a job · A standard · Jackal or wolf

Sent ahead, so that there is a road at all.

Egyptian tradition gives him a name that is also a job: wepwawet, opener of the ways. He is shown as a canine, standing upright on a carrying-standard rather than lying on a shrine, and the standard is the thing to watch — he appears at the head of processions, going in front so that something else can follow. Egyptologists still argue over whether the animal is a jackal or a wolf, and the Greeks settled it their own way by calling his city Lykopolis, the wolf town.
