Wepwawet · Chapter 4 of 4
Two Jackals, One Job
Pose and colour · Shared epithets · A tidy story resisted
Two jackals at the same door, and the labels keep slipping.
The hardest problem in his record is telling him from Anubis. Egyptian art separates them by pose and colour — upright on a standard, often grey or white, against a black canine usually shown lying down — and by the company each keeps. But the texts let the two overlap, sharing epithets and at times each other's work. Modern handbooks that hand each of them a tidy portfolio are tidying. What the material supports is two canine figures with adjacent jobs at the boundary of the living world.
