Zal · Chapter 4 of 7
Rudabeh
Kabul · A tainted line · A rope of his own
She offered her hair. He had thought about it on the way.
One of the poem's great love stories is also a diplomatic problem. In the Shahnameh, Rudabeh is the daughter of Mehrab of Kabul, and Mehrab's line runs back to Zahhak, the tyrant Iranian tradition treats as its worst memory — so both courts object, and astrologers have to be consulted before anyone will allow it. The scene everybody remembers is the tower: she lets her hair down for him to climb. He will not use it. He has brought a rope of his own, and the poem lets that stand as the whole of his character without commenting on it.
