The Feather Burned — illustration for the Zal chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

Zal · Chapter 5 of 7

The Feather Burned

A difficult birth · The Simurgh's instructions · Rostam

He carried it for thirty years and did not use it on himself.

The Shahnameh describes Rudabeh labouring for days and coming close to dying, because the child is too large to be born. Zal burns the feather. The Simurgh comes and gives instructions rather than a miracle: dull the pain with wine, bring a skilled man with a blade, open the side, take the child, close it and dress it, and draw a feather over the place. Both of them live. The boy is so big they name him for the deliverance, and that is Rostam. The gift from the nest, held for a lifetime, is spent on somebody else's survival.

Unlocks in-game at Ascension tier 2.
