Amaterasu · Chapter 3 of 6
What Her Brother Did
Susanoo · Desecration · A death in the hall
It stopped being mischief at the roof of the weaving hall.
The Kojiki describes Susanoo arriving in heaven and escalating: he breaks down the paddy ridges, fills in the irrigation ditches, and fouls the hall where first fruits are offered. Amaterasu makes excuses for him. Then he tears a hole in the roof of the weaving hall and drops a flayed piebald horse through it, and in the Kojiki one of the weaving women is killed by her shuttle in the shock. That is where the excuses stop. The Nihon Shoki tells this differently, and the difference matters.
