Aset, the Throne — illustration for the Isis chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

Isis · Chapter 1 of 7

Aset, the Throne

A throne written · A family · An emergency already running

The earliest picture of her is of somebody looking for something.

Egyptian tradition writes her name with the sign for a throne, and Egyptologists have argued for a century over what that means: a seat personified, a claim about kingship, or a spelling whose logic is simply lost. What the sources are clear about is her position in the family the texts return to most — sister and wife of Osiris, sister of Nephthys and of Set, mother of Horus. The Pyramid Texts already have her mourning and searching. She enters the record in the middle of an emergency and stays there.
