The Search
Fragments first · A Greek narrative · Two thousand years apart
The oldest voices assume the story. The clearest one is a stranger's.
The Egyptian sources treat the search as known rather than as news: the Pyramid Texts have her and Nephthys mourning and gathering, in ritual fragments, with no plot to speak of. The continuous story arrives from Plutarch, writing in Greek some two thousand years downstream — the chest, the river, the tamarisk at Byblos, the body recovered and hidden, Set finding it and scattering the pieces, and the search beginning again. It is one of the fullest versions surviving and the furthest from the culture that produced it. Both of those have to be held at once.
