A Leather Apron on a Spear — illustration for the Kaveh chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

Kaveh · Chapter 3 of 5

A Leather Apron on a Spear

A spear-point · A working apron · A thing that made people choose

It was worth nothing, which is exactly why it worked.

In the marketplace, the Shahnameh has him take the leather apron that smiths wear at the forge, put it on a spear-point, and start shouting. Men of name, worshippers of God: anyone who wants out of Zahhak's fetters, come with me to Fereydun. The ruler here is Ahriman, God's enemy. Ferdowsi then says the thing the whole episode is built to say, and says it about the leather rather than about the man. That poor scrap, worthless as it was, separated friends from enemies. A banner is not a valuable object. It is an object that makes people decide, and the cheapest thing in the shop will do it.

Unlocks in-game at Ascension tier 1.
