Khonsu · Chapter 4 of 5

The Temple Behind the Wall

Karnak · A complete temple · An elevation by endowment

A god grows in the sources when somebody builds him a temple.

The tradition gave him a house that still stands. At Karnak, inside the enormous precinct of Amun, a complete temple was built for Khonsu from the reign of Ramesses III onward — pylon, court, hypostyle hall, sanctuary — and it survives well enough to be walked through today. Its decoration was added over centuries by kings who kept putting their names on it. Late texts inscribed there make him a creator deity, which is an elevation a god acquires by having a well-funded temple rather than by anything present in an older story.

Unlocks in-game at Ascension tier 2.
