What Isis Gathered
The search · Reassembly · A conception
The body was made whole for exactly as long as it needed to be.
In the tradition Isis searches for her husband's body and brings it back together, helped by her sister Nephthys, and the searching wife is among the oldest images in Egyptian religion — the Pyramid Texts already show the two of them mourning as birds. The dismemberment, the pieces scattered along the Nile, the count of fourteen, the part the fish took: those specifics are Plutarch's. What the Egyptian material insists on instead is the outcome. She conceives Horus from a husband already dead, and the succession survives.
