Tahmineh · Chapter 4 of 6
Lips That Smell of Milk
A message at one remove · Three lines · A thing the poem will not say
She did not send him a lie. She sent him a size.
What she actually sent to Rostam is reported at one remove, and it is three lines. Years afterwards, told that a Turanian champion has appeared, Rostam says in the Shahnameh that he has a son by the daughter of the king of Samangan; that Sohrab is still a child; that he sent gold and jewels to the mother by messenger; and that the answer came back saying the dear one will not soon grow tall, he drinks wine with lips that smell of milk. That is the whole of it. He knows the son exists. He has been told only that the son is small, and the poem never says whether she meant it.
